The IWW is an industrial solidarity union. Most unions are business unions (they organize one specific workplace) or craft unions (one specific trade). This is unhelpful because it allows employers to pit workers against one another (even forcing unions to scab one another) and limits our collective bargaining power. The models of industrial unionism and solidarity unionism organize workers within their respective industries as well as across industries; for instance, if factory workers at Company A are striking, then workers at Company B should be able to help them by, say, refusing to move goods made by scabs at Factory A. That’s a very simplistic example, but you get the idea.

This holistic approach also makes it easier for workers to wield our collective power in dealing with stuff that’s normally outside the pervue of your typical A-F-of-L union, such as tenant organizing and community defense & antifascism. The one big union organizes the “whole worker,” wherever economic hardship exists, on and off the shop floor. Like, as for me, as an independent writer, my industrial union is the IWW’s Freelance Journalists Union, but I’m also connected to all the wobblies in my geographical area via our general membership branch and its general defence committee.
